What is the best calorie tracking app for night shift nurses?

Short answer: it depends which job you mean. Shift Fuel times meals to a rotation and does no calorie math. Riseo plans sleep, meals, caffeine and light from a rota. NightFast logs calories on night hours. Welling photographs a short-break plate in a chat. MyFitnessPal barcodes the vending pack. Cronometer is the verified diary. None of these apps is a medical device.

How this list was made

Four questions, answered only from each app’s own website, help center, or App Store listing on October 6, 2026:

  1. Is there a live iPhone listing, or a stated web app?
  2. Does it time meals or sleep to a shift, or only log calories?
  3. How do you log: photo, chat, barcode, search, or meal windows with no calorie math?
  4. What does it cost where the provider states a price and a billing period?

Nine apps meet that bar. A rota planner that does no calorie math still belongs here, because night shift nurses hire that job too. We did not weigh meals or walk a ward, so nothing here is an accuracy ranking or a medical ranking.

The nine apps

1. Shift Fuel: best meal windows on a rotation

Shift Fuel’s App Store listing, read October 6, 2026, is a meal planner for rotating shift workers, including nurses. It names meal windows aligned to shift start, sleep, and built-in rotations: 2-2-3, 4-on-4-off, Panama, or a custom week. Night-shift guidance is pre-shift fuel, a light post-shift landing, and sleep-friendly snacks. The same listing says no macro tracking and no calorie math. Pro is $2.99 a month or $14.99 a year. The listing requires iOS 26.4. It does not name a caffeine cut-off.

2. Riseo: best circadian sleep and meal timing from a rota

Riseo’s App Store listing, read October 6, 2026, is a sleep coach and meal planner. You enter days, nights, swings, or rotating shifts. It names a circadian sleep planner, metabolic meal timing, and light and melatonin guidance. It says it syncs meals, caffeine, and light to your internal clock. Used-by copy names nurses. Riseo Plus is $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year. The listing requires iOS 18.6. It is not a calorie diary on that listing.

3. NightFast: best calorie tracking on night hours

NightFast’s App Store listing, read October 6, 2026, says most food trackers assume breakfast at 8 a.m. and dinner at 6 p.m., and that NightFast does not. Free-to-start copy names food logging with calories, macros, and nutrients (20 logs a day), a barcode scanner, photo food recognition, and an Apple Watch log mid-shift. A January 22, 2026 What’s New note names Night Shift Mode: shift start and end, work days, and meal reminders that adjust. Pro is $9.99 a month, $79.99 a year, or $149.99 lifetime. The listing requires iOS 18.

4. ShiftWell: best sleep, food timing and hydration around a roster

ShiftWell’s site, read October 6, 2026, wraps sleep guidance, food timing, and daily AI coaching around a shift pattern. Meal timing has no breakfast, lunch, or dinner labels. A sample night briefing tells you when to be in bed, when to avoid caffeine, and to keep the last meal light. Pricing is a 7-day trial, then £7.99 a month or £59.99 a year, shown in GBP and charged in local currency. The same page says ShiftWell for iPhone is coming. It is a web app today. It is not a calorie diary on the pages we read.

5. Healthcare Strong: best wellness bundle for healthcare staff

Healthcare Strong’s App Store listing, read October 6, 2026, is a wellness app built by nurses for healthcare workers. It names meal plans, recipes, and grocery lists for long shifts, plus workouts, breathwork, and a shift calendar. The nutrition page names personalized meal plans, recipes, tracking, and a shopping list, and lists a FAQ on calorie or macro goals. We did not find a photo calorie log on the pages we read. The App Store listing is a free download with no in-app purchase SKUs that day. Terms say you can create an account without charge, and that a subscription may be required for full offerings. The app page names iOS and Android.

6. Welling: best chat-style photo log on a short break

Welling’s FAQ, read October 6, 2026, describes photo, voice, chat, nutrition-label, and barcode logging. You can ask for food ideas for remaining calories and macros. A full vitamin and mineral panel is not supported yet; it tracks fiber, sodium, and sugar. Fasting schedules are not supported. The FAQ does not describe a rota, a caffeine cut-off, or a night-shift day. The App Store listing that day lists monthly SKUs from $9.49 to $22.99 and annual SKUs from $59.00 to $119.99, and says a subscription is required for features. The FAQ says trials typically sit on 6-month and annual plans. iPhone and Android.

7. MyFitnessPal: best barcode for a vending pack

MyFitnessPal’s Premium page, read October 6, 2026, keeps a free diary and puts Barcode Scan, Meal Scan, and Voice Log on Premium. Premium is $19.99 a month or $79.99 a year, with a 7-day trial if you have not used one. The pages we read do not describe a night-shift day start, so a 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift still splits across two calendar dates at midnight. Use it when the job is scanning a packaged snack, not timing a rota.

8. Cronometer: best verified nutrient diary

Cronometer’s Gold page, read October 6, 2026, lists tracking up to 95 nutrients on the free tier, with a barcode scanner. Photo Log is Gold ($10.99 a month or $59.99 a year). The photo is a search into the database. You still add oil. The pages we read do not describe a night-shift day start. Stay here if the milligram has to come from a verified entry you will edit. NutriCam vs Cronometer. Iron and B12 on iPhone: best app to track iron and vitamin B12.

9. NutriCam: best next-meal answer from today’s log on iPhone

NutriCam is our app, and it is iPhone only. Photograph a meal or say what you ate, confirm the estimate, and see calories, macros, and vitamins and minerals such as iron and B12. Then ask what to eat next from today’s log, targets, workouts, and Apple Health sleep when connected. It does not read a nurse’s rota, set a caffeine cut-off, plan fasting windows, or schedule meals by shift. Skip it if you need Android or a verified food database. What the app is: what is NutriCam. How the next-meal answer works: what should I eat next. Other photo apps, by job: best AI calorie tracker apps.

Midnight rollover, caffeine, and what NIOSH already says

A 12-hour night still crosses midnight. Most calorie diaries start a new day at 00:00, so lunch at 3 a.m. lands on the next calendar date. NightFast’s listing is the one that names shift start and end times. MyFitnessPal’s and Cronometer’s own pages we read do not. The work-around is renaming meals or logging the 3 a.m. plate on the day you woke up. That is a field caveat, not a feature those vendors advertise.

NIOSH training for nurses on night-shift diet, last reviewed March 31, 2020, and read October 6, 2026, cites Lowden and suggests avoiding or reducing food between midnight and 6 a.m. where you can, keeping three meals per 24 hours, and choosing vegetables, salads, wholegrain sandwiches, yogurt, cheese, eggs, nuts, and green tea on shift. It says sugar-rich and low-fiber carbohydrate foods can increase sleepiness. The next page suggests a small breakfast before day sleep so hunger does not wake you, and avoiding large meals 1 to 2 hours before the main sleep episode.

NIOSH on preparing for sleep, same review date, says the half-life of caffeine is 5 to 6 hours and longer in some people. Night shift workers who rely on caffeine to stay alert could consume it at the beginning of the shift and should stop several hours before the shift ends. Riseo and ShiftWell are the apps on this page whose own copy names caffeine. Shift Fuel’s listing does not. An app reminder is not medical advice.

None of these apps is a medical device. They do not diagnose shift-work disorder. Nutrition from a photo is an estimate. Kitchen tests of photo calorie apps ran low. Details: how accurate are AI photo calorie counting apps. Sleep and workouts in a next-meal answer: nutrition apps that use Apple Health sleep and workouts.

Log the break-room plate in the minute you have, then ask what to eat next from what already went in. NutriCam is an iPhone advisor: photograph a meal or say what you ate, confirm the estimate, and see calories plus vitamins and minerals. It does not read a rota, does not set a caffeine cut-off, and is not on Android.

No app can measure a meal from a photo. A picture cannot show oil, sauces, hidden ingredients, or portion weight. Every number from every app on this page is an estimate until you correct the foods and portions. We have not run an accuracy test across these apps, so this page makes no accuracy ranking.
