How do I track calories with ChatGPT without it forgetting my day?

Keep the tracker in one ChatGPT Project and save today’s meals as a table. Memory is not a food log. OpenAI says it does not retain every detail. Reprint the list after each meal and add it yourself. Start a new chat in the same project when the thread gets long.

What actually forgets

ToolWhat it keepsWhat it dropsUse it for
ChatGPT MemoryPreferences and details it judges relevant. OpenAI, October 10, 2026: Memory does not retain every detail from every conversationToday’s running calorie total. ChatGPT decides what is relevant, and that can changeTargets, how you take coffee, foods you always eat
One long chatMeals still sitting in that conversationOlder meals as the thread gets long. Days mix. Totals stop matching the rowsOne day’s table, if you reprint the whole list after each meal
A ProjectFiles, project instructions, and other chats in that project. You can save a reply as a project sourceNothing in a file you keep. The chat inside the project still driftsThe workspace for the tracker. Free plans get 5 files per project; Go and Plus get 25
A custom GPTIts instructions and knowledge filesPrevious sessions. OpenAI, October 10, 2026: GPTs do not use saved memory or previous conversations. Each conversation starts freshA reusable prompt. Not a diary
Temporary chatNothing after you leave, unless you save itThe whole dayDo not use this as a log

The day disappears because there is no ledger. Memory is a preference layer. A custom GPT starts over. A long chat is a window, not a database. A Project keeps files. Put the day’s meals in a file, not in a hope that ChatGPT will recall the total.

How to keep a ChatGPT calorie log honest

StepDo thisWhy it holds
1. Make a ProjectNew project. Name it Food log. In project instructions: start each morning with the date, keep a table of food, calories, protein, carbs, fat, and remaining vs target, reprint the full table after every meal, never invent a foodProject instructions apply to every chat in that project and override your global custom instructions. OpenAI help, October 10, 2026
2. Keep a fileAdd a spreadsheet or a text table of today’s meals as a project source. After each meal, ask it to update the table. Save that reply back to the projectA file is something you can open tomorrow. Memory is not. OpenAI documents Save to project / Add to project sources on a reply
3. Date the morning“It’s October 10. Start today’s table empty.” Log the meal as food and a portion, not as “add 400”People who skip the date watch yesterday’s lunch land on today. A running total with no rows is the number that drifts
4. Add the rows yourselfWhen you ask what is left, tell it to reprint every row and sum from that list. If the sum and the rows disagree, trust the rowsChatGPT is a language model, not a calculator. r/ChatGPT calorie loggers report a total that does not match the list, then a different total on retry
5. New chat, same projectWhen the thread gets slow or the numbers wobble, ask for a paste-ready summary of targets, usual meals, and today’s table. Start a new chat in the same project. Paste the summary. Keep the filePeople who track food in ChatGPT restart when the thread fills up, often after a few weeks. The Project is what survives. The chat is disposable

ChatGPT still wins a sentence and a photo in the same thread. “Chicken burrito, no sour cream.” A plate at a restaurant. “What should I eat for dinner with the protein left?” That job is real. The fix is the table, not a sterner prompt.

Optional source of truth: an Apple Note or a spreadsheet. ChatGPT estimates the plate. You paste the number into the note. The note is the day.

Why the day’s total still drifts

FailureWhat happensWhat to do
The sumThe model guesses a total instead of adding the rows. One r/ChatGPT thread from August 2025 had 600 + 250 + 200 + 10 listed as 1,560, then 1,060 on retryReprint the table. Add the rows. Do not ask it to remember a running total
Named foodsHoang et al., JAMA Network Open, 2023: ChatGPT energy within ±10% for about 35% to 48% of 222 named foods, depending on model and language. No photographPrefer a label or a database entry when you have one. Treat a named-food guess as a draft
A plate photoFridolfsson et al., 2025: ChatGPT-4o was off by 35.8% on calories on standardized meal photos, on average, and missed more as portions got larger. Oil and sauce barely showConfirm the foods. Add oil if you used it. Change the portion. A photo is not a scale
MemoryOpenAI, October 10, 2026: Memory does not retain every detail. ChatGPT decides what is relevant. Saved memories are for things like a name, a favorite color, or a dietary preferenceRemember the target and the usual breakfast. Do not remember today’s total
A custom GPTOpenAI, October 10, 2026: GPTs do not use saved memory or previous conversations. Each conversation starts fresh. New GPT creation is unavailable on personal ChatGPT accountsUse a Project with a file. A calorie-tracker GPT is a prompt

The chat can still be useful. People on r/loseit log the day in one thread, then late in the day ask what to eat with the protein left. That works while the table is on the screen. It fails when the table is only in Memory, or when the total is a guess.

No app can measure a meal from a photo. A picture cannot show oil, sauces, hidden ingredients, or portion weight. Every number from every app on this page is an estimate until you correct the foods and portions. We have not run an accuracy test across these apps, so this page makes no accuracy ranking.

When you want a log that does not reset

ToolHow the day is stored“What’s left for dinner?”Platforms
ChatGPT ProjectA file or table you keep updating. The chat is not the storeYes, if today’s table is in the chat or the fileChatGPT on web, iPhone, and Android
WellingA log. Photo, text, or voice writes to it. You can open a past date under ProgressYes. FAQ, October 10, 2026: ask for ideas for remaining calories and macrosiPhone and Android
MyFitnessPalA diary. Tomorrow’s app still has today’s mealsNutrition Coach, on some Premium iPhone plans, reads remaining calories from the diaryiPhone, Android, web
CronometerA diary against a verified databaseCrono Coach is a Gold feature on the diary, not on a chat threadiPhone, Android, web
NutriCamConfirmed meals in the app. Photograph or say the meal. The day staysYes. Next-meal from today’s log, targets, workouts, and Apple Health sleep when connectediPhone only

Stay in ChatGPT if the job is a sentence, a menu paste, or a photo, and you will keep the table. Move to a diary if yesterday has to be there tomorrow without a paste. Welling is the chat-shaped version of that diary: the log is in the app, and you still talk to it. MyFitnessPal and Cronometer are the diaries people go back to when the thread forgets. Cronometer is the one to pick when the vitamin number has to hold: NutriCam vs Cronometer.

NutriCam is our app, and it is iPhone only. Photograph a meal or say what you ate, confirm the estimate, and the day stays so you can ask what to eat next. It is not smarter than ChatGPT about nutrition. The claim is that the day is remembered. What the app is: what is NutriCam. How the next-meal answer works: what should I eat next. Photo numbers are estimates: how accurate are AI photo calorie counting apps.

Keep the table you already have, in the project or in a note. If the job is a log that does not reset, that is an app. NutriCam is an iPhone advisor: photograph a meal or say what you ate, confirm the estimate, and the day stays so you can ask what to eat next. It is not smarter than ChatGPT about nutrition. It is not a medical device, and it is not on Android.

FAQ

Does ChatGPT Memory keep today’s calorie total?

No. OpenAI’s Memory help, read October 10, 2026, says Memory does not retain every detail from every conversation. ChatGPT picks what seems relevant, such as a protein target or how you take coffee. That is not a day’s calorie table. Keep the meals in a project file.

Do custom GPTs remember yesterday’s meals?

No. OpenAI’s GPTs help, read October 10, 2026, says GPTs do not use saved memory or previous conversations. Each conversation starts fresh. A calorie-tracker GPT is a prompt, not a diary. Use a Project with a file, or an app with a log.

Why does ChatGPT add today’s meals up wrong?

It is a language model, not a calculator. People who log food in chat report a total that does not match the rows, then a different total on retry. Reprint the full table and add the rows yourself. Named-food and meal-photo tests also miss energy.

Should I start a new ChatGPT thread every day?

Start the day’s table empty each morning, with the date. Stay in the same Project. Start a new chat in that project when the thread gets long or the numbers wobble. Paste targets and today’s table into the new chat. Keep the file so the day survives.

Can I log calories from a ChatGPT photo?

Yes, as an estimate. A photo cannot show oil, sauce, or weight. Fridolfsson et al., 2025, found ChatGPT-4o off by 35.8% on calories on standardized meal photos, on average. Confirm the foods. Add oil if you used it. Treat the number as a draft.

When is a calorie app better than ChatGPT?

When yesterday has to be there tomorrow without pasting a summary. ChatGPT still wins a sentence, a restaurant menu, or a photo in the same thread. Welling keeps a chat on top of a log. NutriCam, on iPhone, keeps the day from a photo or a spoken meal.
