What is a better alternative to using ChatGPT as a calorie tracker?
Short answer: stay in ChatGPT if you will keep a meal table. Memory does not retain every detail. A Project file is the log. Leave for a diary when yesterday has to be there tomorrow without a paste. Welling keeps the chat on a log. Cal AI photographs calories. MyFitnessPal is the diary.
Updated · Written by LAYERTWO, the makers of NutriCam. NutriCam is ours. ChatGPT is not. We say plainly where ChatGPT stays the better pick.

When to stay with ChatGPT
| Job | ChatGPT wins it? | What actually holds |
|---|---|---|
| A sentence or a menu paste | Yes | “Chicken burrito, no sour cream.” A restaurant menu. One thread. No food-database hunt |
| A plate photo | As a draft | Vision is there. Oil, sauce, and weight are not. Fridolfsson et al., 2025: ChatGPT-4o off by 35.8% on calories on standardized meal photos, on average |
| Today’s running total | Only if the table is in the chat or a file | OpenAI, October 10, 2026: Memory does not retain every detail. ChatGPT decides what is relevant |
| Yesterday without a paste | No | A long chat is a window. People who log food in chat restart when the thread fills up |
| A custom GPT as a diary | No | OpenAI, October 10, 2026: GPTs do not use saved memory or previous conversations. Each conversation starts fresh. New GPT creation is unavailable on personal ChatGPT accounts |
Stay if the job is a sentence, a menu, or a photo, and you will keep the table. Put the day’s meals in a Project file, not in a hope that Memory will recall the total. ChatGPT’s pricing page, read October 10, 2026, lists Projects on the Free plan. Plus is $20/month billed monthly. How to keep that table honest: how to track calories with ChatGPT without it forgetting.
Leave, or add an app, when yesterday has to be there tomorrow without a paste, when the sum does not match the rows, or when you are tired of reprinting the list. That is a diary. ChatGPT is still useful for the plate in front of you.
How we picked
Four questions, answered only from each product’s own website, help center, or store listing on October 10, 2026:
- Does it keep a food log that survives a new chat?
- Can you log with a sentence or a photo, the way people already log in ChatGPT?
- Can it answer what is left for dinner from that log?
- What does it cost where the provider states a price and a billing period?
The five apps below are calorie trackers with a persistent log. ChatGPT stays in the table as the baseline because a sentence and a photo in one thread is still its job. We did not weigh meals, so nothing here is an accuracy ranking.
No app can measure a meal from a photo. A picture cannot show oil, sauces, hidden ingredients, or portion weight. Every number from every app on this page is an estimate until you correct the foods and portions. We have not run an accuracy test across these apps, so this page makes no accuracy ranking.
The five alternatives
1. Welling: best if you still want the chat
Welling’s FAQ, read October 10, 2026, says you photograph a plate, type the meal, or speak it, and the estimate writes to a log you can reopen under Progress. You can ask for ideas for remaining calories and macros. That is the ChatGPT loop with a diary underneath. Fiber, sodium, and sugar are tracked; a full vitamin and mineral panel is not supported yet. Apple Health can sync steps, workouts, and weight. It cannot advise on medical conditions. The U.S. App Store listing that day says you need a subscription to access features, and lists Monthly Welling Premium at $9.49, $19.99, and $22.99, and Annual Welling Premium from $59.00 to $119.99. It is on iPhone and Android.
2. Cal AI: best fast photo calorie count
Cal AI’s site, read October 10, 2026, says snap a photo, scan a barcode, or describe your meal for calories, protein, carbs, and fat. Its App Store listing that day says food scanning analysis results require a subscription, and lists Unlimited plans from $2.99 to $29.99 without a billing period on those SKUs. It is on iPhone and Android. We found no next-meal claim on its website or listing. The day is stored. The chat is not the product. NutriCam vs Cal AI. Other Cal AI options by job: Cal AI alternatives.
3. MyFitnessPal: best if you want the big diary
MyFitnessPal is the diary a lot of people left for ChatGPT, and it is the one they go back to when the thread forgets. The Premium page, read October 10, 2026, lists $79.99 a year or $19.99 a month. Meal Scan, Voice Log, and barcode scan sit on Premium. Nutrition Coach can tell you what to eat with your remaining calories, on Premium and Premium+, on iOS, in English, in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Coach cannot log food for you. Independent photo loggers: MyFitnessPal alternatives.
4. Cronometer: best verified micronutrient database
ChatGPT guesses. Cronometer looks up. The Gold page, read October 10, 2026, says the free tier tracks up to 95 nutrients and compounds with a barcode scanner against a database of lab-analyzed or verified foods. Photo Log, Voice Log, Crono Coach, and Food Suggestions are Gold ($10.99 a month or $59.99 a year). The photo is a search. You edit ingredients and portions. Choose it if the vitamin number has to hold. NutriCam vs Cronometer.
5. NutriCam: best for “what should I eat next?” on iPhone
NutriCam is our app, and it is iPhone only. Photograph a meal or say what you ate, confirm the estimate, and see calories, macros, and vitamins and minerals such as iron, B12, magnesium, and iodine. Then ask what to eat next. The advisor uses today’s log, your targets, your workouts, and Apple Health sleep when connected. It is not smarter than ChatGPT about nutrition. The claim is that the day is remembered. Skip it if you need Android or a verified food database. What the app is: what is NutriCam. How the next-meal answer works: what should I eat next.
Photo logs miss oil and sauce. Independent kitchen tests of other apps ran low. ChatGPT meal photographs miss energy too. Details: how accurate are AI photo calorie counting apps.
Keep the table you already have. If the job is a log that does not reset, that is an app. NutriCam is an iPhone advisor: photograph a meal or say what you ate, confirm the estimate, and the day stays so you can ask what to eat next. It is not smarter than ChatGPT about nutrition. It is not a medical device, and it is not on Android.
FAQ
Should I keep using ChatGPT as a calorie tracker?
Stay if you will keep a meal table in a Project file, and the job is a sentence or a photo in the same thread. Memory is not a food log. Custom GPTs start each chat fresh. Move to a diary when yesterday has to be there tomorrow without a paste.
Does ChatGPT Memory keep today’s calorie total?
No. OpenAI’s Memory help, read October 10, 2026, says Memory does not retain every detail from every conversation. ChatGPT picks what seems relevant, such as a protein target. That is not a day’s calorie table. Keep the meals in a project file.
Which ChatGPT alternative still lets me chat?
Welling. Its FAQ, read October 10, 2026, says you can ask for ideas for remaining calories and macros, and you can open a past date under Progress. MyFitnessPal Coach does that on some Premium iPhone plans. NutriCam, on iPhone, answers what to eat next from today’s log.
Which ChatGPT alternative has a verified food database?
Cronometer. The free tier tracks up to 95 nutrients with a barcode scanner. Photo Log and Crono Coach are Gold. ChatGPT guesses named foods and plate photos. Cronometer maps the photo onto verified entries you then edit.
Do these calorie trackers work on Android?
ChatGPT, Welling, Cal AI, MyFitnessPal, and Cronometer are on Android. NutriCam is iPhone only. If you need Android, skip NutriCam. Welling is the chat-shaped diary on both phones. Cal AI is the fast photo count on both.
Is a ChatGPT calorie log accurate enough to trust?
Treat it as a draft. Fridolfsson et al., 2025, found ChatGPT-4o off by 35.8% on calories on standardized meal photos, on average. Named-food tests also miss energy. Diary apps estimate from photos too. Confirm foods and portions. Trust a label or a database entry over a guess.
