Is there an app that tells nurses what to eat during a night shift?
Yes. Shift Meal Timer and Shift Fuel time meals to a night shift and name what to eat in that window. NightFast logs calories on night hours and lists AI meal suggestions. Welling answers remaining-calorie food ideas in chat. NutriCam, on iPhone, answers what to eat next from today's log. None of these is a medical device.

Facts above come from each app’s own website, help center, or App Store listing on October 7, 2026. We did not walk a ward or weigh meals, so nothing here is an accuracy ranking or a medical ranking.
A rota timer is not a next-meal answer
The question mixes two jobs. One app times the window. Another names a plate from food you already logged. NightFast is the closest to both: a calorie log on night hours plus AI meal suggestions. Shift Meal Timer and Shift Fuel name the window and a food type. Welling and NutriCam name a plate from a log you already kept, and do not read a rota.
Shift Meal Timer’s site, read October 7, 2026, is built on CDC/NIOSH guidelines. For a 12-hour night it shows a pre-shift main meal, a 2 a.m. light-protein slot (eggs, nuts, yogurt), a late-shift snack, a post-shift wind-down, and a caffeine cutoff six hours before sleep. Midnight-to-6 a.m. meals are tagged light and protein-focused. The App Store listing says each slot shows the time, meal type, and food suggestions. It is not a calorie diary. The listing says it is not a substitute for a clinician or registered dietitian. Pro is $4.99 a month on the site. The U.S. listing that day showed “Pro — Full Access $4.99” without a billing period.
Shift Fuel’s listing, the same day, is a meal planner for rotating shift workers, including nurses. Today view: what to eat right now or next. Night-shift copy names pre-shift fuel, a light post-shift landing, and sleep-friendly snacks. Built-in rotations: 2-2-3, 4-on-4-off, Panama, or a custom week. The same listing says no macro tracking and no calorie math. Pro is $2.99 a month or $14.99 a year. It requires iOS 26.4. It does not name a caffeine cut-off.
Riseo’s listing syncs meals, caffeine, and light to a rota you enter. Used-by copy names nurses. It is not a calorie diary on that listing. ShiftWell’s site wraps food timing around a shift pattern, with no breakfast, lunch, or dinner labels. A sample night briefing says keep meal 2 light: eggs, oats, something easy to digest, and cut caffeine. It is a web app. The same page still says ShiftWell for iPhone is coming.
NightFast’s listing says most food trackers assume breakfast at 8 a.m. and dinner at 6 p.m., and that NightFast does not. Free-to-start copy names calories, macros, and nutrients, photo recognition, a barcode scanner, and an Apple Watch log mid-shift. It also says AI learns your eating patterns and suggests meals. Pro copy names AI-powered food recommendations, custom meal schedules for rotating shifts, and 100+ sleep-friendly recipes. A January 22, 2026 What’s New note names Night Shift Mode: shift start and end, work days, and meal reminders that adjust.
Welling’s FAQ says you can ask for food ideas for remaining calories and macros, and it will generate a meal plan from the targets you set. Photo, voice, chat, and barcode logging. Fasting schedules are not supported. The FAQ does not describe a rota, a caffeine cut-off, or a night-shift day. iPhone and Android.
NutriCam, which we make, photographs a meal or takes a spoken sentence, then answers what to eat next from today's log, targets, workouts, and Apple Health sleep when connected. It does not know a nurse's rotation. iPhone only.
Healthcare Strong’s nutrition page, read October 7, 2026, names personalized meal plans, recipes, tracking, and a shopping list for healthcare staff. The App Store listing names meal plans for long shifts. We did not find a night-clock meal timer or a photo calorie log on the pages we read.
NIOSH already named the food
An app can time a window. It does not replace the food list nurses already have. NIOSH training for nurses, last reviewed March 31, 2020, and read October 7, 2026, says: a main meal before the night, keep midnight to 6 a.m. light, three meals per 24 hours. On shift it names vegetables, salads, vegetable soups, fruits, wholegrain sandwiches, yogurt, cheese, eggs, nuts, and green tea. Sugar-rich, low-fiber carbs can increase sleepiness. Eat with colleagues away from the work site if you can.
The next page says a small breakfast before day sleep so hunger does not wake you, and avoid large meals 1 to 2 hours before the main sleep. Avoid heavy, fatty, or spicy foods. Try to have only light caffeine during the shift.
NIOSH on preparing for sleep, same review date, says the half-life of caffeine is 5 to 6 hours and longer in some people. Night shift workers who rely on caffeine to stay alert could consume it at the beginning of the shift and should stop several hours before the shift ends. Shift Meal Timer, Riseo, and ShiftWell are the apps on this page whose own copy names caffeine. Shift Fuel’s listing does not. An app reminder is not medical advice.
What to eat on a 12, with that list unpacked: what should nurses eat on a 12 hour night shift.
You still have to pack the bag
A phone does not see the break-room plate. Night-shift nurses on Reddit pack yogurt, cheese, eggs, nuts, fruit, and a sandwich they can eat one-handed while charting. When the bag is empty, the vending machine is dinner. An app that times a window still needs food in reach. An app that answers what to eat next still needs today's log.
Photograph it, say it, scan it, or type it. Then the next-meal question has something to work from. A 12-hour night still crosses midnight. Most calorie diaries start a new day at 00:00, so lunch at 3 a.m. lands on the next calendar date. NightFast’s listing is the one that names shift start and end times. Confirm foods. The day's total is still an estimate.
Apps by job, including barcode diaries: best calorie tracking app for night shift nurses. How a next-meal answer is built: what should I eat next. What the app is: what is NutriCam. Kitchen tests of photo calorie apps ran low: how accurate are AI photo calorie counting apps.
Pack the bag before the 12. Log whatever actually went in at 3 a.m., then ask what to eat next. NutriCam is an iPhone advisor: photograph a meal or say what you ate, confirm the estimate, and see calories plus vitamins and minerals. It does not read a rota, does not set a caffeine cut-off, and is not on Android.
No app can measure a meal from a photo. A picture cannot show oil, sauces, hidden ingredients, or portion weight. Every number from every app on this page is an estimate until you correct the foods and portions. We have not run an accuracy test across these apps, so this page makes no accuracy ranking.
FAQ
Do any of these apps read a nurse's night rotation?
Shift Meal Timer, Shift Fuel, Riseo, NightFast, and ShiftWell time meals or sleep to a shift you enter. Welling and NutriCam do not read a rota. NutriCam uses today's food log, targets, workouts, and Apple Health sleep when connected. It does not import a roster.
Can an app tell me what to pack for a 3 a.m. break?
Shift Meal Timer tags midnight-to-6 a.m. meals as light protein. Its site, read October 7, 2026, names eggs, nuts, and yogurt at 2 a.m. NIOSH names yogurt, cheese, eggs, nuts, and a wholegrain sandwich. Pack those. An app reminder is not a packed bag.
Does a food app replace NIOSH night-shift diet guidance?
No. NIOSH training for nurses, last reviewed March 31, 2020, is the food list: a main meal before the shift, light food from midnight to 6 a.m., a small breakfast before day sleep. Apps time a window or suggest a plate from a log. They do not replace that guidance.
When should night shift nurses stop caffeine?
NIOSH says the half-life of caffeine is 5 to 6 hours, longer in some people. Take it at the start of the shift and stop several hours before the shift ends. Shift Meal Timer sets a cutoff six hours before sleep. An app reminder is not medical advice.
Which of these night-shift food apps work on Android?
Welling is on Android. ShiftWell is a web app; its site, read October 7, 2026, says iPhone is coming. Shift Meal Timer, Shift Fuel, Riseo, NightFast, and NutriCam are iPhone listings. If you need Android, skip NutriCam.
Is a next-meal answer from an app medical advice?
No. None of these apps is a medical device. NIOSH training for nurses, last reviewed March 31, 2020, is occupational guidance. Nutrition from a photo is an estimate. See a clinician for medical nutrition.
