What should I eat after a night shift before I sleep?
Eat a small breakfast before day sleep so hunger does not wake you. NIOSH training for nurses, last reviewed March 31, 2020, names cereal and milk: a protein and a carbohydrate. Avoid large meals 1 to 2 hours before sleep, and heavy, fatty, or spicy food. This is not medical advice.

What a small breakfast is after nights
| Food | On NIOSH's post-shift list? | What that looks like at 7 a.m. |
|---|---|---|
| Cereal and milk | Yes. Named: a protein and a carbohydrate | The bowl NIOSH wrote down. Small. Then bed. |
| Yogurt and fruit, toast, oatmeal | Not named. Same job: small, protein plus a carb | What night-shift nurses actually eat at the counter before day sleep. |
| Eggs on toast | Not named. Light if it stays small | Fits if it stays small. A diner scramble with hash browns does not. |
| McGriddle, Waffle House, drive-thru breakfast | No. Heavy, fatty, often large | A second dinner after a brutal 12. Nurses still stop there. It is the plate NIOSH says to skip. |
| Pizza, fries, leftover dinner | No. Large meal 1 to 2 hours before sleep | Hunger at clock-out is real. This is not the small breakfast. |
| Beer, wine, a drink to knock yourself out | No. Avoid alcohol | NIOSH: alcohol can help you fall asleep, then it wakes you early. |
| Coffee on the drive home | No. Caffeine half-life is 5 to 6 hours | Still in you at 1 p.m. Stop several hours before the shift ends. |
Those lines are from NIOSH module 9, page 9 and the sleep page, last reviewed March 31, 2020, and read October 7, 2026. The sleep page names cereal and milk. The diet page names a small breakfast so hunger does not wake you, and says avoid large meals 1 to 2 hours before the main sleep. They are occupational guidance, not a personal meal plan and not a prescription.
Night-shift nurses on Reddit still hit the McGriddle or Waffle House after a rough 12, or they cannot eat at all and go straight to bed. NIOSH covers both: the small breakfast is for hunger, not a fourth meal. If you already ate on the 12, go to bed. If hunger will wake you, cereal and milk, yogurt, toast, or oatmeal. Not another dinner.
When to eat it, and what to skip
| Window | What NIOSH says | What that looks like after a 12 |
|---|---|---|
| Clock out | Go directly to bed. Do not use early morning for chores or errands. This is prime sleep time. More sleep before 2 p.m. is better. | Home, blackout, sleep. The small breakfast is the stop before the pillow, not a sit-down. |
| If you have not eaten for hours | A small meal with a protein and a carbohydrate, like cereal and milk, so hunger does not wake you. | The bowl from the fridge. Not a diner. Not a second dinner from the bag. |
| 1 to 2 hours before sleep | Avoid large meals. Avoid heavy, fatty, or spicy food 2 to 3 hours before bed. | If you clock out at 7 a.m. and sleep at 8, keep the plate small. A large meal sits in that window. |
| Caffeine | Half-life is 5 to 6 hours, longer in some people. Could take it at the start of the shift. Stop several hours before the shift ends. | No coffee on the drive home. No energy drink at 5 a.m. if day sleep is the job. |
| Alcohol | Avoid. It can help you fall asleep, then it causes early awakening and sleep disturbances. If you drink, have it several hours before bed. | A beer to knock yourself out after nights is the opposite of that. |
| Liquids | Avoid before bedtime so you do not have to get up during sleep. | Water earlier on the 12. Not a large bottle at 8 a.m. |
NIOSH on preparing for sleep, same review date, is the caffeine, alcohol, liquid, and heavy-meal list. The on-shift diet page still wants three meals per 24 hours. The heavy one sits before the shift. Midnight to 6 a.m. stays light. The plate after the 12 is the small breakfast, then day sleep.
Some nurses on Reddit eat their largest meal minutes before bed or they cannot sleep. NIOSH wrote the other way: small, then bed. This page reports the training. This is not medical advice.
What an app can time, and what it cannot
| Job | Who does it | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| A light post-shift landing on a night or 2-2-3 rotation | Shift Fuel | No calorie math. Listing, read October 7, 2026: pre-shift fuel, a light post-shift landing, sleep-friendly snacks. iPhone. Requires iOS 26.4. |
| A wind-down meal after a 12-hour night | Shift Meal Timer | Times the slot from CDC/NIOSH. Site, read October 7, 2026, labels that post-shift plate Regular, not Small. NIOSH still says keep it small. Not a calorie diary. iPhone. |
| Last meal light before you sleep on a roster | ShiftWell | Sample night briefing, read October 7, 2026: keep meal 2 light, eggs, oats, cut caffeine, in bed by 08:30 after a 07:00 finish. Web app. iPhone is coming. |
| Sleep-friendly recipes on a night clock | NightFast | Pro copy, read October 7, 2026: 100+ sleep-friendly recipes, wind-down routines. Listing does not name the foods. iPhone and iPad. |
| Caffeine and meal timing synced to a rota | Riseo | Not a calorie diary on its listing, read October 7, 2026. Metabolic meal timing and caffeine guidance. iPhone. |
| Photo or voice log, then what to eat next | NutriCam | Does not read a rota, set a caffeine cut-off, or schedule a post-shift plate. iPhone only. |
Shift Fuel, Shift Meal Timer, ShiftWell, NightFast, and Riseo time a window or a wind-down. They do not replace NIOSH's food list. Shift Meal Timer's site is built on CDC/NIOSH guidelines and still marks the post-shift plate Regular on a sample 12-hour night. NIOSH's own pages say small. An app reminder is not the bowl.
NutriCam, which we make, photographs a meal or takes a spoken sentence, then answers what to eat next from today's log, targets, workouts, and Apple Health sleep when connected. It does not know a nurse's rotation, and it does not time a post-shift breakfast.
The whole 12, with the on-shift list: what should nurses eat on a 12 hour night shift. Apps that name the next plate: is there an app that tells nurses what to eat during a night shift. Apps by job: best calorie tracking app for night shift nurses. How a next-meal answer is built: what should I eat next. What the app is: what is NutriCam.
Eat the small breakfast, then go to bed. Log whatever actually went in. NutriCam is an iPhone advisor: photograph a meal or say what you ate, confirm the estimate, and see calories plus vitamins and minerals. It does not read a rota, does not set a caffeine cut-off, and is not on Android.
No app can measure a meal from a photo. A picture cannot show oil, sauces, hidden ingredients, or portion weight. Every number from every app on this page is an estimate until you correct the foods and portions. We have not run an accuracy test across these apps, so this page makes no accuracy ranking.
FAQ
Should I skip food entirely after a night shift?
No. NIOSH says eat a small breakfast before day sleep so hunger does not wake you. If you have not eaten much for several hours, eat a protein and a carbohydrate, like cereal and milk, then go to bed. Three meals per 24 hours. Skipping the plate is not what NIOSH wrote.
Is a drive-thru breakfast a good meal after nights?
Usually no. NIOSH says avoid large meals 1 to 2 hours before sleep, and avoid heavy, fatty, or spicy food. A McGriddle or a Waffle House platter is a second dinner. Cereal and milk is what NIOSH named. This is not medical advice.
When should I stop caffeine if I sleep after a night shift?
NIOSH says the half-life of caffeine is 5 to 6 hours, and longer in some people. Night shift workers who use caffeine to stay alert could take it at the start of the shift and should stop several hours before the shift ends. A coffee on the drive home is still in you at 1 p.m.
Does alcohol help me sleep after a night shift?
NIOSH says avoid alcohol. It can help you fall asleep, then it causes early awakening and sleep disturbances. If you drink, have it several hours before bed. A beer to knock yourself out after a 12 is the opposite of that. This is not medical advice.
What if I feel too sick to eat after a night shift?
The small breakfast is for hunger, not a fourth meal. NIOSH says go directly to bed when you arrive home. If you already ate on the 12, you can skip the extra plate. If hunger will wake you, eat cereal and milk or yogurt. This is not medical advice.
Which apps time a post-shift meal to a night rotation?
Shift Fuel names a light post-shift landing. Shift Meal Timer shows a wind-down meal after a 12-hour night. ShiftWell's sample briefing says keep the last meal light: eggs, oats. NightFast lists sleep-friendly recipes on Pro. They time a window. They do not replace NIOSH's food list.
